Slowly Dying of Survival?

Do you ever get the feeling that you are just surviving,

- that you are so focussed on the things that you need to do rather than what you want to do

- that you’ve lost touch with those things that bring you joy in life

- that you start each day tired and end up exhausted

- that you’re not taking care of yourself

I know what it is like to work long hours and long weeks. I know the cost of this on health, on family and friends. I learned the hard way.

But… there is a better way.

7 Quick steps to a healthier You

     1)   Carve out some “ME” time

Yes I know it sounds impossible – you probably don’t even stop to eat your lunch – but try it – you will find that you are more productive and creative. Even if it is just 5 minutes to start with – try it….

     2)   Clean-up your food and drink intake

Do you <need> a sugary snack mid afternoon? Are you running on coffee? Do you need a drink, or several, to unwind in the evening?

Look at what you are putting into your body – and make healthier choices – take an apple to work, drink herbal tea, avoid stimulants including sugar…. You already know all this stuff, just do it.

     3)   Get enough sleep

Make sleep one of your priorities – it is amasing how much better the world seems after a good nights sleep.

If sleep is a problem for you look at what you can do to improve it (dark cooler bedroom, no electronic devices, sleep meditation, reduce alcohol, coffee etc). There are many good articles on how to improve your sleep.

     4)   Exercise

Make sure you get some exercise – if you are commuting by public transport, get off one stop earlier and walk, take a break and go for a brisk walk outside, take the stairs….

     5)   Mindfulness

Incorporate some mindfulness into your day – maybe start with a 5 minute meditation. A really simple thing to do is to stand on one leg while you are brushing your teeth and just be aware of balancing your body. You have to brush your teeth anyway so why not do it mindfully.

     6)   Reconnect with friends and family

Send a text to someone who you care about. Go ahead – do it now! See how good it feels.

     7)   And lastly, be kind to yourself

You don’t need to do everything at once, just commit to make small changes one after the other.

And remember, small steps can take you a long way.
